What did the record REALLY say? We often look at a document and quickly come to a conclusion as to what it means. But...is it really tell us that? We will look at numerous instances where we can misinterpret the evidence. Dower, Entail and Primogeniture Understanding their differences will help in gleaning the clues they hold. A keen look that opens many new doors. Its Causes and Its Records A fresh look at this forgotten war; why we entered, what happened, and the records it left. These are among the most misunderstood records and thus rarely used. Yet, they often contain marriages, deaths, Bible records, etc. County and Other Local Land Records This lecture will show the wide diversity of county land records, how to access them, how to use and interpret them. One of the most valuable of genealogical sources, they are vastly underused and misunderstood. Federal Land Records to Locate Ancestors The case files contain valuable genealogical data. Once understood, federal land becomes a valuable resource. Includes data on homestead, cash files, bounty land, etc. Addicted to Courthouses! Courthouses can be intimidating. This lecture will guide the researcher past the clerks and into the valuable records. The answers to many genealogical problems are sitting on those courthouse shelves! Estates: A Goldmine! Often researchers even those experienced, will consult the wills, but little else. Many examples will be presented including those from original packets. Avoid the Crooked Path! Genealogical Problem Solving Demonstrates with overheads and case studies how to zero in on the goal, reduce the problem, and stay on the path to solve it. A great motivational talk. Transcribing and Abstracting: The Technique and Legalese Concrete examples of how to transcribe including the old style letters and obselete phrases, clauses to watch, how to treat additions and questioned items, eliminating boilerplate, etc. Military Records on the Internet What is available on the Internet to help with your military search, from early times to present times. Some surprises here. This lecture is one of the favorites. Strategies are presented to maximize onsite research, with a case study to illustrate it. The same strategies can be used even when not on-site. Genealogical Proof Standard: Building a Solid Case Do you have enough evidence? Is it all circumstantial? What if it conflicts? What is more believable? How do you weigh it? Is your case convincing? Specific examples will demonstrate. Revolutionary War Records: Beyond the Pension Most researchers find the pension records, but are unsure how to proceed beyond. This lecture presents a number of important revolutionary records and illustrates the genealogical value of each. Using Little Known and Neglected Sources: A Potpourri In this lecture a variety of records are discussed from land to federal to court and military. The examples presented will open many doors to the researchers who think theyve examined everything. Military Records for Problem Solving We often listen to lectures regarding military records, but how can they effectively be used in problem solving? This lecture will show how to tackle a problem with a view towards the military records. And importantly, how we can let one military record lead us to others that are lesser known. This lecture demonstrates, via a power point presentation, many different ways in which a family history can be enhanced with illustrations.
